Brett Favre comeback talk as rumors swirl

Brett Favre comeback talk as rumors swirlAfter buzz about a comeback surfaced Wednesday, the retired Green Bay quarterback told the Biloxi Sun Herald that "it is all rumor."

When asked about the possible media storm that might follow, Brett Favre texted back, "No reason for it."

Favre told that he was "just tired" when he retired in March after a seventeen year of NFL career. But after almost 4 months away from the rigors of offseason training, can the legendary Packers quarterback be having change of heart?

On Thursday, the Green-Bay Press Gazette jumped on board, citing sources that said Favre had inquired about a return to the team. The report detailed an offseason of retirement cat and mouse between Favre and Packers management and told Favre approached head coach Mike McCarthy 2 weeks ago about returning.

But Brett Favre, the report told that he was "rebuffed."

On Thuesday, a former Favre teammate in Green Bay helped ignite the speculation, telling the QB might not be gone for good.

"I know he has the itch to come back and play," Packers cornerback Al Harris told on ESPN's NFL Live. "If he will or not, I don't know."

The Packers had planned to use Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback for the upcoming season.

"Aaron is our quarterback," Harris told. "Brett's retired. But if he wanted to come back, there would be some guys who wouldn't mind it. I would welcome him back with open arms."

"The Packers have no reaction," team spokesman Jeff Blumb told The Associated Press.

Favre's agent, James 'Bus' Cook, didn't return a message left by The Associated Press seeking comment. Packers major manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy were on vacation.

Favre has 2 years left on his contract at an average of about $12.5 million per season. The Packers placed him on the reserve-retired list in the spring so his salary doesn't now count toward the cap.

Favre's commitment to retirement has been questioned since his announcement. That talk resumed in mid-March when Favre withdrew from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, scheduled for June 11-13.

Tournament spokesman Steve Griffith told then that Favre had to miss the event because of a scheduling conflict.

When he retired, a teary Favre told, "I have given everything I possibly can give to this organization, the game of football, and I don't think I have got anything left to give And that is it. I know I could play. But I don't think I want to."

But less than 2 months later, he told reporters he may be open to returning if Rodgers was injured.

Favre, a three-time MVP, leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He began 253 consecutive regular-season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275.

Rodgers, meanwhile, has stirred up controversy himself this week. In a Sports Illustrated story, the quarterback told he didn't need to prove anything to the fans.

"I don't feel I need to sell myself to the fans," he told in the article. "They need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut."
